My Favorite Supplies

Every writer has their favorite supplies they use while working on a project. Here are mine:
  1. Mini notebook for research, brainstorming, and/or world building
  2. Composition notebook
  3. RSVP pens (black for writing, red for editing, and blue for revising)
  4. Post-its of varying colors (each decision category gets its own color, e.g., characters, plot, setting, etc.)
  5. Empty wall for post-its
  6. Whiteboard and markers (specifically to help visualize plot branching)
  7. Yellow highlighters
  8. Dictionary and thesaurus
  9. Children's Writer's Word Book
  10. Drinks and snacks (I get the munchies when I write)

My Favorite Tools

As a pen/paper writer, one of the most complex parts of the writing process is transcribing all of my written words into typed text. I’m not the fastest typist, and with my first book, it took me a week to type everything. However, Dragon changed all that. It took my second book from a week of transcribing to two days of reading. In two days, I had typed out 140 pages, single-spaced.

My husband got me my first Rocketbook for Christmas as he knew how much I love writing in notebooks. And boy, do I love this tool. At this point, I own nearly every version of Rocketbook on the market, including the index cards and Post-its. While I still use some paper products (like composition notebooks), my general note-taking is now done on a Rocketbook.

I use Scrivener for big projects, like a book series. It helps me keep track of elements that need to be consistent through every book.

As someone who isn't as good as grammar as I should be, Grammarly helps me a lot both with grammar issues but with shortening long sentences.

My Favorite Apps

Color Note is my mobile post-it. If inspiration hits me while I am mobile, I use this app to document my decisions. I then transcribe them onto a traditional post-it when I'm back home.

Write by Voice is my on-the-go transcriber. It's helpful when inspiration hits and I don't have a writing platform handy.

As a paper writer, I can write anywhere. So I need a mobile Dictionary and Thesaurus to help me out sometimes.
